West Lothian team race to top prize at STEM racing challenge
A talented team of Linlithgow Academy pupils have brought silverware back from the Aramco STEM Racing World Finals 2025 in Singapore.
Vega Racing by Alan Steel Asset Management (ASAM) is made up of Kirsty Taylor, Evie Melvin, Clara Wylie and Joseph Moon, and were awarded the Team Identity Trophy at the awards, which saw 84 teams from 36 countries take part.
Formerly known as F1 in Schools, the Stem Racing competition challenges students to form their own Formula 1 team and design, build, test, and race a 15 cm scale model Car of the Future, powered by compressed gas. At the World Finals, teams present their cars, pit displays, portfolios, and verbal presentations to judges, with races taking place on a 20-metre track where cars cover the distance in just over a second.
Across the five days of competition, Vega Racing were on track racing four times against teams from around the globe. They also spent time in the F1 pit lane and paddock for the Singapore Grand Prix, as well presented their engineering, enterprise and project management folios and a verbal presentation.
The team performed incredibly well, picking up nominations for their enterprise folio and sponsorship and marketing work, which led to the Team Identity Trophy. Joseph Moon was also one of ten students selected by Komatsu Williams Engineering Academy for a four-year mentorship program.
Linlithgow Academy Headteacher Grant Abbot said: "The Vega Racing team had an incredible experience in Singapore and represented West Lothian with real professionalism and pride.
"They fully-deserved their Team Identity trophy for the years of hard-work and dedication, after the disappointment of not being able to attend the finals last year.
"It's fantastic achievement for Kirsty, Evie, Clara and Joseph, expertly supported by Mr Marshall, that will stand them in good stead for their futures. The Engineering Academy mentorship programme is also an amazing opportunity for Joseph to further develop his skills."

The team will now take part in the Scottish Regional Finals hosted at Linlithgow Academy on Friday 7 November, where other Linlithgow teams, Aurora Racing and Thistle Dynamic Racing, are aiming to follow Vega Racing's success.
