12 Union Canal in Winchburgh

This canal was originally dug in the 1820's. The canal towpath, on the east side, is part of Scotland's National Trail network and can be reached by parking in Winchburgh and walking along the Millgate Wood path. Exposures of sedimentary rocks (sandstone, siltstone and mudstone) belonging to the West Lothian Oil-shale Formation formed in the early Carboniferous Period, can be seen in the banks of the canal.

Nearby sites are Greendykes Bing (7) and Craigton Hill Quarry (44).
